My prime focus for this summer’s weekends is to Zumba my way through Prince George’s County with other county residents, friends, and family. Saturday June 1st is Bowiefest. A celebration of the best of Bowie with food, music, arts & crafts, vendors and more. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Allen Pond Park, 3330 Northview Dr., Bowie. FREE to the public!! Enjoy entertainment on two stages, featuring Bowie’s own Belle Aires Twirlers, Dance Expressions, as well as The Electric Company rocking the stage. Rides, games, and activities make a day at Bowiefest complete. Enjoy the moon bounces, rock walls and petting zoos, and pony rides. Bowiefest staple, Reptile World with Michael Shwedick, will again be on the amphitheater stage. Bands of Bowie, Polaris, The Blue Bridge Band , and the Good Time Band will all be performing. Taking place Thursday June 6th is an event that is very special to me because I’ll be a
celebrity judge at the grilling competition portion! “Grill, Grapes, & Jazz” Charity Grill Off, Wine/Beer Tasting and Silent Auction is sponsored by Prince George’s County business leaders the HR Source. There will be a culinary competition that involves some professional chefs and my seasoned palette awaits! Registration is $65 and well worth it. The event is being held at the Historic Oxon Hill Manor, 5:30p-9:30p. Live jazz, international wines/beers, and the proceeds help to support 5 local nonprofits (Girls, Inc • Jobs, Housing & Recovery • Mission of Love Charities • Street Sense • A Wider Circle) that serve vulnerable populations in our communities. The second weekend in June is the celebration of Capitol Heights founding, Capitol Heights Day. Geez, that’s going to be a busy weekend for me. The festivities start with an award dinner on Thursday, June 6th; I won’t be able to attend because I’m a
celebrity judge at Grill, Grapes, & Jazz. Friday June 7th at 6pm there’s a gospel concert at 1101 Brooke Road Park featuring local churches and residents. Saturday, June 8th is the official Capitol Heights Day Parade which starts at 10am in the parking area of the Capitol Heights Metro Station on Davey Street and ends at Brooke Road Park. Juneteenth 2013 Celebration, Saturday, June 15th, 11:30a-5:00pm (rain or shine) at Watkins Regional Park, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD 20774. This is PGCo’s Parks and Recreation’s 6th annual Juneteenth Celebration and it’s a FREE family event open to the public.
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The Prince George’s County Juneteenth Celebration offers culturally inspired dance and musical performances including traditional African dance with contemporary military movements by Taritibu Youth Association, urban dance moves by Savage X. A variety of musical selections by Nolan Williams and the Voices of Inspiration, Upton Blues Band, Black Notes, Sudden M Pac and Mainouna Youssef will stir the soul. From 8:30 am-4 pm the Watkins Nature Center will again host the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society, Inc. and their partners who have planned a series of exciting lectures and workshops on African American genealogy and history. Wednesday June 26th 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. marks the Third Annual Golfing for Education Tournament to Benefit Prince George’s County Public Schools’ Excellence in Education Foundation for PGCPS, Inc. The Tournament is being held at the Woodmore Country Club Golf Course; I’m told it’s quite snazzy.
The Excellence in Education Foundation for PGCPS, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charitable organization committed to surpassing last year’s fundraising goal of $150,000. Proceeds from the tournament will support scholarships and other education-related programs that benefit PGCPS students. “Fundraisers like this golf tournament are critical because of the growing need for scholarships, which makes higher education more affordable for our students,” says Thomas H. Graham, Honorary Co-Chair and member of the Excellence in Education Foundation’s Board of Directors. “I’m honored to be a part of an organization that supports Maryland students.”

Get Kids Movin’ fitness tour is this Sunday, June 30th from 1 to 5 p.m. at National Harbor, MD. Get Kids Movin’, presented by Sports Zone Elite and Think Brown INK, is an interactive afternoon of youth in music, fitness, entertainment, health and arts-related activities, all designed to aid in the fight against childhood obesity. The tour was inspired by the work of 10-year-old recording artist and philanthropist Chi Chi Monet who makes positive songs for youth.
